DC Comics Storylines Part 5

Hello and welcome back to my DC Comics storylines series. I know comics aren’t for everyone, so if you read these even though you have no interest, thank you! I appreciate it. I write this series for one simple reason: I enjoy it! I enjoy reading these stories, I enjoy writing about them and giving other likeminded comic fans recommendations on what to read next. So, if you enjoy this series (or any of my other posts) don’t forget to share and subscribe!

As usual, I will be talking about three comics I recently read. Today I am going to start with Lex Luthor: Man of Steel. The summary of this series (from the DC Universe Infinite App) states: “Discover why Luthor chooses to be the proverbial thorn in Superman’s side and why he sees himself as humanity’s savior.” As most people know, even if you’re not a comic fan, Lex Luthor hates Superman. He despises him. In this mini-series you will see why Lex feels the way he does towards Superman, and how he decides he is going to make him irrelevant and take him down. I found this series interesting. I never read a Luthor series before, but I’m glad I made this one my first. It doesn’t portray him as a big bad supervillain like the Superman stories do. It shows his genuine, human concern about an alien flying around saving the day. It kind of makes you realize why Lex Luthor is the way that he is (I’m still team Superman though).

Next up is one of my favorites. It easily made my list, that’s how good I thought it was! It is called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. It’s written by Tom King (the guy who wrote my all-time favorite Superman: Up in the Sky). This is the story James Gunn and DC Studios are basing their Supergirl live-action movie on. I don’t think it’s going to be an adaptation of the comic, but this is the type of Supergirl character they will base their character around. Super pumped for it! (see what I did there?). Cheesy jokes aside, here is the summary of this story from the app: “Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame. Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.” I really enjoyed this story because it wasn’t your normal “Oh look at me I’m a superhero saving the day” type of story. No, this was pretty emotional. It does not go the way you think it does, and it shows a side of Supergirl that, I think, none of us have ever seen. To put it simply, it’s brilliant. If you haven’t already, and you’re interested, give this a shot!

The last one I’m going to share with you today is titled Blue and Gold. This is a story about Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. It’s a humorous underdog story that will make you laugh and have you cheering the entire time. I really loved it because it was something new for me to read and it really made wonder what was going to happen next. Here is the summary from dc.com: “Desperate to regain the spotlight, Booster Gold looks to attract the public’s (and Justice League’s) attention the same way any washed-up, second-rate hero would—social media. The not-so-tech-savvy hero from the 25th century enlists the help of his best friend, Blue Beetle, who possesses both the money and the brains to help his old pal navigate the scary world of internet influencers. Watch out, evildoers, our heroes are live and online! Don’t miss Dan Jurgens’s triumphant return to Booster Gold with the help of all-star artist Ryan Sook (Legion of Super-Heroes), telling a tale filled with heart and maybe even redemption for DC’s two favorite underdogs!”Like I said, it’s really great and I hope you give it a shot. There’s not much else I can say about it!

I hope you enjoyed today’s edition of DC Comics Storylines! Please share and follow if you did 🙂
