It went by so fast (Also the title of the episode). This week the final episode of Superman & Lois aired. Long story short – I LOVED IT. Wait, no. WE loved it. Lea and I have been watching it together since it premiered. The series as a whole was incredible, but the final episode, down to the final scene was so SO GOOD.
I remember years ago when the show Supergirl was airing on The CW. It was okay, I watched a little bit of it but it wasn’t really for me. Eventually they brought in Superman, who was played by Tyler Hoechlin. I brushed it off. “He doesn’t have the look. His suit looks stupid.” I thought. I didn’t pay attention to him at all. Then, after multiple CW superhero show crossovers, they took a chance and gave Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch (Lois Lane) a chance, and created Superman & Lois. Again, I wasn’t interested. He wasn’t my “Superman”. Boy was I wrong.
It wasn’t until I saw either an Instagram post or a Tweet from Bitsie asking for fans opinions on Lois Lane’s look. Her outfit, if I am remembering correctly. I thought “Hmph. She actually cares. She is putting in a lot of effort to get this role just right.” That was also no the only time she’s done that. Throughout the last four years she has made it clear she would like input from fans so she can give the best and most comic-accurate portrayal of Lois. So I told Lea I wanted to watch the premier of the show to see what it’s all about. She joined me on the couch and we watched. I was blown away. Tyler was, is, and has been an incredible Superman. Honestly, he is probably the best live-action Superman to date. I have a list of my favorite Supermen. First is Tom Welling from the show Smallville(obviously). Second is without a doubt Tyler Hoechlin. He was so good in Superman & Lois and I am not exaggerating. He captured the Superman aura perfectly.
Bitsie Tulloch is also in my top three for live-action Lois Lane performances. Again, my number one spot goes to Erica Durance from Smallville, but Bitsie is my number two. You know what? How about this. Let’s make Erica no. 1 and Bitsie no. 1A lol. There. That’s how good she has been as Lois Lane. I don’t know what else to say. She has been incredible. Tyler and Bitsie have portrayed these iconic characters in a way no one has seen before. They were and are amazing. Now that I’ve gotten my admiration for those two out of the way, let’s focus on the series finale.
It was action packed and very, very emotional. Without spoiling anything, it really focuses on love. Eternal love, actually. It tugged hard on our heartstrings. Family, forgiveness, and of course HOPE (because that’s what Superman is all about!) were the other focuses of the finale. Again, the writing was top-notch and the acting was perfect. The series had to make some budget cuts in their final season, but that did not stop them from making the show look absolutely beautiful. They put whatever money they had in all the right places. With the budget cuts came using the secondary characters a little less and a little differently. Again, that didn’t stop them from providing us with a great show. They figured out how to use these other characters in a way that advances the plot and continues their own stories. Very well done!
Another thing I loved about this show, and it’s something I mentioned to Lea as we were watching the finale, is how mature the show is. I was really happy with that. What I mean is, the maturity when it came to the relationships throughout the series was refreshing. There were no love triangles or relationship drama (besides season one or two, but it was necessary drama to advance a storyline). It was nice to see for once.
Gosh, this show was so good. The finale was so good! I can’t get over it. I’ll tell you what….the DCU Superman movie comes out in July of 2025…I don’t know how it’s going to turn out, but any Superman project after Superman & Lois is going to have to go above and beyond. This show will be hard to top. Ugh there is so much I want to say but I really don’t want to spoil anything in case my readers want to try out the show (on Max & possibly The CW app??). Let me end it here then before I spoil something: this show stayed so true to Superman and his history, lore, mythos, whatever you want to call it, until the very end. It was perfect. They took the whole series in a different direction than most of us thought they would go and it was a big risk, but they pulled it off….Incredible.
Go watch Superman & Lois!
