Lonzo Ball picks up option for ’24-’25 season

Per ESPN, Sources: Bulls’ Lonzo Ball picks up $21.4M option for 2024-25.

Well, I can’t say I’m surprised. When the Bulls signed Lonzo a couple years ago they gave him a “four-year, $80 million deal (ESPN).” Who wouldn’t cash in on that? I don’t blame him at all, I would do the same thing, but it’s not good for the Bulls organization.

Without the slightest clue if Ball will be able to play again, the Bulls still have to pay him a ton of money, which doesn’t leave much left for any new talent they are looking to acquire. It also does not help that Zach LaVine was given a max contract and will likely be traded next season. However, I’m not sure how it works, to be honest, but I think if he is traded then whatever organization he ends up with has to finish paying him. I really don’t know. Either way, this is not a good financial situation the Bulls have found themselves in.

And after being bounced from the playoff by losing in the play-in tournament for a second year in a row, Chicago is not a desirable destination for big-name-free-agents. Jerry Reinsdorf and Arturas have gotten this team into quite the pickle, and we will have to wait and see how it all plays out.
