DCU Updates: Superman cast interviews, Possibility of a Sequel, & a Movie in Development

The summer of Superman is upon us! Next month, on July 11th, James Gunn’s Superman hits the big screen. This will be the first Superman movie in over a decade, and I think people will love it. The film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Entertainment Weekly published a lengthy, yet entertaining, article about the movie and its cast. Superman lights the way: How Hollywood’s new Man of Steel Shepherds the DC universe of tomorrow (exclusive).

Entertainment Weekly’s Nick Romano writes this. There is a lot of great information in this piece; however, I’ll discuss the parts I believe to be important, and if you are interested, you can read the rest HERE

The article starts by discussing Corenswet’s appearance. “David Corenswet looks like just about any of Hollywood’s past Supermen in the right light. In particular, he often gets the Henry Cavill comparison.”  I never understood why people are surprised that a Superman actor looks like other Superman actors. They all look like Superman, so they’re all going to look the same. This, however, is my favorite comparison: “I’ve also got a lot of physical comparisons to Tom Welling, who played Superman and Clark Kent on Smallville…When I was growing up, he was the Superman who was on TV every week. I think, to one extent or another, all of the Superman actors…There’s some Venn diagram of our physical characteristics, which makes sense for a superhero who is classically the one who doesn’t wear a mask,” Corenswet said. I love David being compared to Tom Welling from Smallville (one of my favorite shows, and also, my favorite Superman).

If you’ve watched Smallville, you know Tom Welling’s version of Clark Kent was very emotional. He was a teenager for half of the series, and a young adult for the other half. He was learning to harness his powers and discovering what it meant to be a hero. He had his trials, which led him to become Superman. One thing Smallville’s Clark Kent/Superman had to learn, but wholeheartedly did not agree with (at times), was that there are rules to saving people. In the official trailer for Superman, we see Corenswet’s Clark Kent acting similarly to Welling’s. He is upset because he’s being told there are rules when it comes to saving people, and he believes he should be able to help people whenever and however he wants. He doesn’t understand the “rules” the government has in place to help people. He just wants to do good. That is why I love this comparison. Yes, he looks a little bit like Tom Welling, but to me, everything I’ve seen of his Superman/Clark Kent thus far tells me we’re going to see a Superman very similar to the one from Smallville (which is great!).

“I wanted to tell the story about someone who was truly good in a world that doesn’t value goodness, in a world that makes fun of basic kindness and basic human values. The fact that he can fly and lift buildings and shoot laser beams out of his eyes was really secondary to who he was as a person and what he stood for,” said James Gunn. I’ve said this many times, but I love how much James Gunn understands the character. I love how much of a comic nerd he is, and I love how this movie looks like it’s ripped straight out of a comic book. These two sections of the piece stood out to me. There are so many more great things in there, so if you’re interested, give it a read. One last thing from this article that I wanted to touch on was James Gunn’s answer to a question about a possible Superman sequel.

When asked if he is thinking about a sequel, Gunn replied, “What I’m working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.” This leads some fans to speculate on what he could be working on. Many people online are agreeing that James Gunn is probably writing a World’s Finest movie, starring Superman and Batman. I’m going to say it right now, if that is what he is working on, it may be the highest-grossing superhero film of all time, and I am not exaggerating. The only other hero that, in my opinion, is on their level is Spider-Man. The World’s Finest box office numbers will be insane.

As for the movie that is currently “in the works,” as the title says, Wonder Woman movie officially in the works: ‘Being written right now’ (exclusive). Entertainment Weekly’s Nick Romano writes this also. “Gunn officially confirms that a Wonder Woman movie is in development as we speak. ‘Wonder Woman’s a separate thing’ to the already announced Paradise Lost HBO/Max series, which is ‘slow moving, but it’s moving’, Gunn says.”

This is exciting news! Not only for Wonder Woman fans, but for DC Comics fans in general. You can’t start a new DCU without having the complete superhero trinity (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman). In other news, season two of Creature Commandos is in the works, and there is a second Superman trailer that dropped the same day the tickets went on sale. You can watch that below:

That is all the updates I have at the moment. I’m sure more will come out soon!
