James Gunn’s DC Universe has officially kicked off with two brand new episodes of the animated show Creature Commandos. Per James Gunn: “Creature Commandos launches on Max today [December 5th], everywhere where Max is, including Japan on Max with UNEXT. Also on Binge in Australia, JioCinema in India, and coming to Adult Swim in Canada tomorrow (12/6).”
Creature Commandos
I watched the first two episodes and, I know I am a little biased being a big DC fan and all, but it truly was a really great opening into this huge, already active, established, DC universe. These characters and countries have been around for ages and it’s as if we are being dropped off in the middle of their lives, which is super cool! Right from the start you know how some of the older DC movies and shows are connected to this new universe. You can see how this universe has been active for a long time and how much history it has. The politics of the fictional countries make you feel like they’ve been around forever.
Don’t let the show being animated turn you off. DC Studios has done a phenomenal job with it. It really does not seem like an animated show – that’s how good it is. The characters move so fluidly and the action scenes are incredible. Also remember the DCU is going to flip flop between animated and live-action shows/films. I will give you a bit of a warning, I don’t believe it’s for kids! Lol. There are scenes where it gets very adult, very fast. There are also many scenes where James Gunn’s sense of humor shines through, which makes it even more fun to watch.

I listened to the first episode and I enjoyed it a lot. It truly is for newcomers and longtime fans alike. I won’t go into too much detail about the episode (because you can listen for yourself if you want), but I do want to touch on one thing I believe Frankey Smith mentioned that I agreed with one-hundred-percent. I’m not going to quote her because I can’t fully remember what was said, so bear with me while I try to paraphrase. It was something along the lines of how the characters in Creature Commandos (CC) compared to the characters in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad (SS) movie differ. In SS, the characters are in prison because they committed horrible, illegal acts. While in CC, we don’t know why they are in prison. They are just monsters. They’re people just like you and me. They may not be human, but they are people and perhaps they are just misunderstood people, like most of us are. I thought it was a great take on the episodes so far. That is something James Gunn excels at. He is so good at finding a way to express to the viewers how a character feels misunderstood, out of place, weird, left out, etc. It makes you really feel for them and root for them – even when they’re not heroes. Even when they’re not doing good things. He makes the characters relatable that way. We’ve all been there. Where we feel misunderstood and weird and left out. It’s a great way to have your audience connect with your characters.
