DC Comics Story Line Part 11

Hello and welcome back to my DC Comics Story Line series! In this series you’ll find reviews on two or three stories I have recently read. Hopefully you will find some interesting and pick of a few copies for yourself to read! There’s just something about the artwork, and (most of) the storytelling that really takes your mind into another world. So, now that the introduction is finished let’s get started!

Superman Smashes the Klan

From DC.com“The year is 1946, and the Lee family has moved from Metropolis’ Chinatown to the center of the bustling city. While Dr. Lee is greeted warmly in his new position at the Metropolis Health Department, his two kids, Roberta and Tommy, are more excited about being closer to their famous hero, Superman! Inspired by the 1940s Superman radio serial “Clan of the Fiery Cross” and drawn by Gurihiru, Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese, Boxers and Saints, The Terrifics, New Super-Man) brings us his personal retelling of the adventures of the Lee family as they team up with Superman to smash the Klan! A rousing story of self-acceptance and standing up to hatred, Superman Smashes the Klan reminds us that not all Golden Age enemies have been defeated.”

I absolutely loved this story. I thought it was fantastic. The art is great, and the story is really interesting. Some comics tend to get a political message out there and some try to stay away. For the most part they’ve (at least the one’s I’ve read) tended to stay away. But this one dove right in and they crushed it. They touch on racism (obviously) and delve into all the societal issues that go along with it. It’s very well done, and the story continuously provides the readers with hopeful messaging. Superman is a symbol of hope so it makes sense that this was a central theme throughout the story.

Batman the Court of Owls

Per penguinrandomhouselibrary.com (the site where I ordered my graphic novel/compact comic of this story that is pictured above): “After a series of brutal murders rocks Gotham City, Batman begins to realize that perhaps these crimes go far deeper than appearances suggest. As the Caped Crusader begins to unravel this deadly mystery, he discovers a conspiracy going back to his youth and beyond to the origins of the city he’s sworn to protect. Could the Court of Owls, once thought to be nothing more than an urban legend, be behind the crime and corruption? Or is Bruce Wayne losing his grip on sanity and falling prey to the pressures of his war on crime?”

I love this novel. The writing was top notch! The writers made is so spooky and creepy, and the artists added to it. Whether it was the Court of Owls members with their owl masks on, or the Talon sneaking up on Batman from the shadows, it sent a shiver down my spine every time I saw it! Oh, I didn’t even mention the nursery rhyme about “the court”…Ah it gives me the creeps just thinking about it. Given that I knew nothing about the Court of Owls before reading this, the entire story was a huge mystery to me. This made it so much harder to put the book down at night so I could go to bed. I was reading it until my eyes starting closing on me lol.

Some things throughout the story I could predict, but the ending was one thing I did not anticipate. It truly made my jaw drop and that’s not something that happens to me very often. I could see the court of owls being a villain in Matt Reeve’s The Batman movie universe, which stars Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight. He would make them 100x more creepy in live – action lol.

If you like spooky and mysterious pick up your copy today!

Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed this edition of DC Comics Story Lines!
