Hello and good evening! After a week of sickness running through our house like crazy I am happy to report that we are all feeling much better. What a relief. You know, I see people online making memes about how we don’t appreciate breathing clearly until we get congested for a week when we’re sick. I never relate to that meme more than when I have to sleep sitting up with a tissue in one side of my nose because I can only breathe through one nostril.
I don’t think I’m going to take breathing freely for granted anymore! Anyways, there isn’t much going on in my life to talk about right now, so I wanted to discuss a few things I found in the news cycle recently that were interesting to me.
First, lets talk about the Bears. You hear me complain about the Bulls all the time, but I never really talk about the Chicago Bears. That’s because I never really got into football until this past season. I’ve always been a Bears fan though, I just never cared to watch or keep up with it. However, this past year was different for me. Although the team wasn’t good, I enjoyed watching almost every Sunday. It was fun and something to look forward to.
Today the Bears and their quarterback, Justin Fields, parted ways. It was expected (as the Bears have the number one pick in the NFL draft and are likely going to draft college star Caleb Williams as their new quarterback). Per The Athletic, Bears trade QB Justin Fields to Steelers for 2025 6th – rounder: How he fits in Pittsburgh. I like Justin Fields. I think he’s a good kid and he can be a great quarterback in the NFL. He didn’t perform how the organization wanted though, and he also didn’t have the help he truly needed to succeed in Chicago. It stinks to see him go, but I am so excited for the future of this team!
Next, let’s dive into a more scientific story. This is from The Debrief: Glowing Plants That Turn Energy Into Light Are About To Be Commercially Available For The First Time. I found this article very interesting. Does this mean lamps are going to be irrelevant? Lol. Who knows, but it’s really cool that they are studying and toying with these types of plants. Per The Debrief, “The compact gene plays a pivotal role, acting as a bridge between plant metabolism and light production,” Light Bio explains. “This connection allows the plant’s inner dynamics to be translated into a constantly changing spectacle of natural light.”
They go on to state “The company also says that due to their fungi genetic breakthrough, their glowing plants are 100 times brighter than previously possible ‘with the petunia standing out as the most radiant’.” The article is not that long, so if you are interested in reading more you can find it here: https://thedebrief.org/glowing-plants-that-turn-energy-into-light-are-about-to-be-commercially-available-for-the-first-time/
That was just something I found interesting and thought maybe some readers who are plant lovers might as well. The last article I’m going to cover is going to be in the political realm. I figured why not just cover all the bases in this post lol. We talked about sports, science, and now politics. From The Daily Wire Chicago Moving Ahead With Plans To Evict Illegal Immigrants From Shelters. I know this is a hot issue in America right now, but I’m not here to talk about my views on immigration. No. I want to talk about something that’s been bugging me for weeks personally that I’ve seen in Chicago when I am up there. The article states that people mock Chicago for claiming they are a sanctuary city, but then doing things like this. And honestly, those mocking are not wrong. It’s a bit hypocritical wouldn’t you say? Anyways, seeing this article just adds to my annoyance with the city and their “sanctuary city” claims.
In my opinion, and from what I’ve seen from walking on a couple streets three times a week, is that they are not in fact a “sanctuary city” like they claim. There are young men and women sitting in the cold on the streets, shielding their babies from the wind, rain and snow with just a thin blanket. Trying to sell candy just to make a little bit of money. It’s sad. I see it every day I am in Chicago. So my issue is that if you are going to call yourself a sanctuary city you need to be prepared for when those who need sanctuary show up on your doorstep. The mayor never had a plan. The governor of Illinois never had a plan. It was all political speech and theater that they spout when they want to seem morally superior.
I’m not exaggerating when I say it breaks my heart a little bit. Each time I walk by these families, these kids, freezing in the cold, it hurts. I just wish the “sanctuary city” of Chicago was more prepared to help these people who desperately need it. Not everyone who comes into the country illegally is a bad person. Some just want better lives for themselves and their children. I hope and pray they get the help they need to find shelter and food and some sort of income.
To be fair to the city (because it’s amazing and beautiful and I love it despite its flaws), the article also states “Once illegal immigrants have been evicted from the shelters, they may find alternative housing arrangements or they can go back to Chicago’s “landing zone” – where they go upon first arrival in the city – and request to be reassigned to a shelter.” Again, this just sounds like one big mess. But I guess we will have to see.
I hope you enjoyed tonight’s post, and found some things insightful or entertaining.
Have a good night!
Peter
