This is so strange because I just wrote about him returning as Superman recently. The DC Comic’s world was shocked last night to learn that James Gunn, the new head of DC at Warner Bro/Discovery, had met with Henry and basically fired him from continuing to play Superman.
It sucks, but that’s the business I guess. I would have loved to see Henry play Superman for a few more movies at least, but he isn’t what they are looking for now. James Gunn created a thread on Twitter talking about this. Here are the parts that I think are the most important:
“…Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”
“But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
When asked if he is writing and directing, James Gunn replied “I am writing (and have been for a while). We don’t know who is directing yet.”
And lastly, he confirmed it will NOT be another origin story (thank God).
Okay, so let’s start with the first quote. In his movie we are going to see a younger Superman, so it makes sense why Henry was let go. The old studio had him for years and wasted him, so there is no point in being upset with James Gunn. I will bet his Superman movie is good. He is writing it and it’s going to be something new and refreshing. We’re going to see Clark Kent start his job at the Daily Planet and learn how to be Superman. It will be interesting for sure, I just hope they cast the character well.
He then mentioned working with Henry in the future? Does that mean he will come back as another character in the DC Universe? Or will Henry make an appearance as Superman one more time for a Crisis on Infinite Earth’s movie? We won’t know for a while but it will be interesting to see what happens.
Some people don’t like James Gunn’s work. I think he’s alright. Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t he write some of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies for marvel? Or did he just direct? Either way they are really entertaining, so the fact that he is writing Superman, and really cares about the character and the DCU makes me really excited to see what he has planned. It also makes me happy to see the studio taking their time to plan the entire DCU for the next eight to ten years. It should be interesting!
As for Henry, he is my favorite live action Superman. There is no question about it. I’m disappointed Warner Brothers wasted him all these years, then finally let him come back only to fire him. He deserved better than that. I’m sure we’ll see him again down the road though. Like I said, I really think he will be back for a Crisis on Infinite Earth’s movie (I’m currently in the middle of reading that comic story line, by the way. If any of you care. lol).
Alright I am calling it quits for tonight. Maybe I’ll be back tomorrow – who knows!
Peter
