Chicago Bulls, NBA Draft, Free Agency & KD

There is a lot of Bulls basketball to cover this morning, so I’m just gonna get right to it.

Let’s start with the 2022 NBA draft. There was tons of speculation as to who the Chicago Bulls new management would draft. Most people thought it would be a big-man to back up Vuc at the center position. Others thought it would be a point guard, or someone we could include in a trade package for Rudy Gobert. Turns out, we were all wrong.

The bulls didn’t draft a center, a point guard, or a player to add into a trade for the three-time NBA all-star. No. The Bulls decided to surprise everyone and draft 19-year-old 6-foot-7 combo guard from Phoenix: Dalen Terry.

I’m not hating on this pick. I’v watched some of his highlights from college, this kid is good and I think he will help the Bulls in ways we don’t understand yet. This kid is athletic, he’s tough, he brings energy and heart. I think, if anything, he will be a great motivator for everyone on the team. I can’t also forget to mention he LOVES the Bulls. He told K.C. Johnson and Rob Schaefer on the Bulls Talk Podcast that he watched the Chicago Bulls documentary, The Last Dance (which is about Michael Jordan and his Bulls team), about 30 times. So, having a kid like this on our team, who loves the sport, loves the team, loves the city, will definitely have it’s benefits.

As most people know, 2022 NBA free agency also started yesterday and oh man has it been interesting. Let’s start with who the Bulls have signed so far. Again, there has been a ton of speculation the last two days, along with rumors, about who the Bulls are interested in signing. Unfortunately, they haven’t made a ton of moves yet because Zach Lavine hasn’t re-signed as quickly as we all had hoped, but we will discuss that later. around 8pm last night, at least that’s when I saw the news, the Bulls signed center Andre Drummond. The 6’10, 280lbs 28-year-old is going to be filling a spot that the looks need depth at desperately.

It will be interesting to see whether he starts over Williams and plays next to Vucevic, or if he will be a back up center (which is what I think is going to happen). Either way, he is a great pick-up for Chicago in my opinion. The Bulls needed someone who could actually rebound and catch passes coming off their bench, and Andre Drummond is the perfect person to do that. Let’s just hope he stays healthy!

Taking a step away from Bulls basketball for a moment, I need to discuss the biggest news to come out of free agency yesterday…Kevin Durant. The 33-year-old all-star, who is arguably the best player in the world right now, requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets, and I don’t think anyone saw this coming. I’m sure Brooklyn’s phone has been ringing off-the-hook with proposals from every single team in the NBA. The Bulls don’t have a ton to offer without blowing up our whole team, but I think there is something in the works to see if we can grab KD before someone else does.

Which brings me back to Zach Lavine. As I stated earlier, Lavine has not re-signed with the Chicago Bulls yet. Everyone was expecting him to sign right away. Even people in his circle have said he plans to re-sign with the Bulls. However, I, along with many people in the Bulls fan-page group on Facebook, think there is something else in the works. Something behind-the-scenes that is happening to see if we can acquire Kevin Durant. Is this why Zach hasn’t re-signed yet? Are they negotiating a pay cut with him in order to bring his friend, KD, to Chicago? If Zach really wanted to make a run for the title as soon as possible, this would be the way.

To have a line up of Lonzo Ball, Zach Lavine, Demar Derozan, Kevin Durant, and Nikola Vucevic would be wild. The Bulls would be instant contenders. The only problem is I don’t think KD wants to play for Billy Donovan again. Only time will tell what happens next. We just have to wait and see!
